The constraint used in these pieces is a simple concatenation principle, similar to musical modulation, where a pivot chord is used to shift from one key to the next – as well as a French nursery rhyme from my childhood, “Trois petits chats” (“Three little cats”). The chaining process creates garlands of ‘clichés’ evoking various aspects of the contemporary world, the tension between the respect of the constraint and the thirst for surprise and diversity creating something akin to a linguistic Rorschach test: given a snippet, where does the mind go when asked to treat it as the incomplete start, or end, of something?
