SUBMISSIONS WINDOW: June 1 - July 31

DESCRIPTION

Tilted House’s chapbook prize, 1BR / 3BATH, is looking for 16-35 pages of something fresh—experimental, puckish, political, funny, playful, polemical, and/or uncomfortable. In a word: anti-poetry. While there is no theme, per se, we are hungry for work that twists the arm of poetry’s status quo. We like meta poetics, satire, work that is aware of itself and what’s in the air. Maybe you “don’t know what you’re doing” or feel like your work is “unpublishable.” Send it to us! Give us your freaky. Give us your fun.

1BR / 3BATH deviates from other chapbook prizes because the final object is not a commodity. It’s not printed on-demand. It’s a finite artifact: each book ardently bound by hand and hugged with a letterpressed cover. The size, shape, and texture of the book are not predetermined—they will reflect the content we choose to publish. The winning manuscript will be printed in a run of 150-200.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

READING PERIOD: June 1–July 31, 2023. Submissions close at 11:59pm CST.

Contest will be judged by the Tilted House Editors and read on a rolling basis (so submit sooner than later!)

The recipient will be announced no later than October 15.

We reserve the right to extend the deadline if a manuscript is not selected from the original reading period.

READING FEE: $10–$25, suggested. As a small press, this fee helps us IMMENSELY to fund things like printing, studio time, web hosting, and band-aids. Though it isn’t mandatory, it is encouraged. Your amount choice will not alter our decision-making process. Please choose whatever fee makes sense for you.

RECIPIENT RECEIVES: 15 copies of the manuscript and $200.

UPON PUBLICATION: The winning manuscript will be published in a handbound edition of 200 with letterpress-printed (or otherwise relief-printed) covers. A second printing is possible but not guaranteed.

WHO MAY SUBMIT: We welcome work from everyone living within the United States and encourage poets from the regional south, specifically Louisiana, to submit.
